NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Oyo Over Abducted Teachers, Pupils

Nationwide solidarity protests slated as union demands immediate, unconditional release of victims from Ogbomoso-area school attacks

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a directive from its National Headquarters, the union said the withdrawal of services would continue until all kidnapped victims are released unconditionally. It also announced nationwide solidarity rallies scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, to press home its demands.

The action stems from the May 15 attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in the Ogbomoso area, where gunmen invaded multiple institutions, including Baptist Nursery/Primary School and Community High School. During the incident, a teacher was killed, while several pupils and staff members were abducted. Some of the victims are reportedly still in captivity more than two weeks later.

The development has triggered widespread concern among parents, educators, and residents, with many describing the situation as a severe threat to the safety of schools and the future of education in the state.

The NUT said the strike was necessary to protect its members and draw urgent attention to the deteriorating security situation, stressing that teachers cannot continue to work under conditions that put their lives and those of their pupils at risk.

The planned shutdown is expected to disrupt academic activities across Oyo State, affecting thousands of students and raising concerns about examination schedules and learning continuity.

Stakeholders say the move will intensify pressure on both the Oyo State Government and federal authorities to secure the safe return of the victims and strengthen security around schools.

The incident adds to a growing list of school-related security crises in Nigeria, further amplifying calls for decisive action to safeguard the nation’s education system.
