Former Anambra governor studies global insurance models, targets stronger primary care, wider coverage, and improved emergency response
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has engaged healthcare professionals and policy experts in the United States as part of efforts to understudy effective health systems and insurance models that can be adapted to Nigeria.
The meeting, held on Friday, June 5, 2026, centred on how well-structured health insurance schemes can drive better outcomes, particularly in primary healthcare and emergency services.
Obi said expanding health insurance coverage remains a top priority, alongside strengthening primary healthcare centres across electoral wards to ensure more Nigerians can access quality care without financial strain.
He emphasised the urgent need to invest in training and retaining healthcare workers, improve emergency response systems, and build a functional framework that delivers timely and affordable medical services to ordinary citizens.
The former governor noted that Nigeria’s healthcare sector continues to face deep-rooted challenges, including high treatment costs, underperforming primary health facilities, workforce shortages, and limited insurance penetration.
According to him, fixing the system requires deliberate investment in people, infrastructure, and policies that prioritise accessible healthcare for all—not just those who can afford private hospitals.
