Aso Rock warns of misinformation ahead of elections, says no “Project True Federation” bill exists and urges Nigerians to ignore divisive rumours
The Presidency has firmly dismissed a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intends to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the North, describing the claims as entirely false and deliberately misleading.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said there is no such proposal before the government, nor any plan to forward a bill—reportedly dubbed “Project True Federation”—to the National Assembly.
According to the statement, the circulating narrative is a politically motivated fabrication aimed at stoking division and heightening tensions as the country approaches another election cycle.
The Presidency emphasized that any constitutional amendment in Nigeria is a rigorous process that requires extensive legislative scrutiny, debate, and approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, as well as endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
It urged Nigerians to disregard the report and remain vigilant against misinformation, especially as political activities intensify nationwide.
Reaffirming the administration’s priorities, the statement noted that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
