Algeria Stage Comeback to Beat Jordan 2–1, Keep Knockout Hopes Alive

Benbouali’s late strike seals crucial win as Jordan exit World Cup after back-to-back defeats

Algeria rallied from behind to secure a vital 2–1 victory over Jordan in their Group J clash at the FIFA World Cup, boosting their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

The match, played in Santa Clara, began with Jordan taking an early lead through Nizar Al-Rashdan, putting the World Cup debutants in a strong position.

However, Algeria responded with urgency and composure. Amine Gouiri restored parity before halftime, finishing clinically to bring the North Africans back into contention.

With both sides pressing for a decisive goal in the second half, Nadhir Benbouali emerged as the match-winner, striking in the 82nd minute to complete Algeria’s comeback and secure all three points.

The defeat confirms Jordan’s elimination from the tournament following consecutive group-stage losses. They will face Argentina in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday in their final match, playing only for pride.

Algeria’s win lifts them level on three points with Austria, who suffered a 2–0 defeat to group leaders Argentina earlier on Monday. Argentina sit top of Group J with six points from two matches.

Algeria will now face Austria in Kansas City on Saturday in a decisive encounter that could determine their place in the knockout rounds.
