Church calls for unity, justice, and stronger security measures as Nigeria reflects on victims of violence and the promise of democracy.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as Black Sunday, calling on Christians across the country to mourn victims of insecurity and demand decisive action from government authorities.
In a message to mark the day, CAN President described the occasion as a solemn moment to honour the countless Nigerians—men, women, children, clergy, farmers, and students—whose lives have been lost or disrupted by violence, kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry.
He said the country is facing a deepening crisis, stressing that the Church cannot remain silent while citizens continue to live in fear.
“This is not only a day of mourning, but a time to speak with one voice. Our nation is bleeding,” the CAN leader said.
The commemoration comes just days after Nigeria marked Democracy Day on June 12. CAN noted that democracy is rooted in the protection of human life, justice, and the rule of law, adding that national security is central to the success and sustainability of democratic governance.
Quoting Matthew 5:4, the association expressed solidarity with bereaved families, displaced persons, and victims of violence, while offering prayers for comfort, healing, and justice.
CAN also called on the federal, state, and local governments to take urgent, decisive, and sustained measures to address insecurity, describing the protection of lives and property as a sacred responsibility.
The association further commended the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing Bill on June 11, 2026, describing it as a step toward strengthening grassroots security. It urged the Senate to expedite its consideration of the bill.
In addition, CAN advised churches, schools, hospitals, and other faith-based institutions to heighten security awareness and adopt proactive safety measures, including collaboration with local security networks.
The association urged Christians to remain united, support affected communities, and continue praying for national peace and healing.
CAN also prayed for wisdom and courage for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders in addressing the country’s security challenges.
