Wife of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu ridicules viral claims of divorce, offers no response to wider allegations
Uchechi Kanu, wife of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly dismissed viral reports claiming she has filed for divorce from her husband.
In a reaction posted on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Uchechi ridiculed the claims, expressing surprise at what she described as fabricated reports circulating online.
“Good conscious evening, my blessed Biafrans. I have just learned that I filed for divorce while my husband is in prison,” she wrote, punctuating the post with laughing emojis.
Her response comes amid widespread media reports alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings following years of alleged infidelity, financial neglect, and interference from Kanu’s family.
The reports further claimed that the marriage, which began in 2009, had broken down irretrievably. They also alleged that Kanu was involved in multiple extramarital affairs and had prior ties with a woman identified as Chioma Amaryllis Ahaghotu before his arrest in 2015.
However, Uchechi’s brief statement did not directly address the specific allegations, focusing instead on debunking the central claim that she had filed for divorce.
Nnamdi Kanu remains in custody following his conviction on terrorism-related charges linked to his agitation for the secession of Biafra.
