Super Falcons star shrugs off online abuse following Casablanca hotel theft, vows focus as Nigeria chase 11th WAFCON title

Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has hit back with defiance after facing a wave of racist abuse online, sparked by her comments on a theft incident that targeted Nigerian players in Morocco.

Okoronkwo had earlier revealed that she and several teammates were victims of a hotel theft in Casablanca ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). But her outspokenness drew ugly reactions on social media, with her Instagram flooded by racist insults and offensive imagery.

Refusing to be distracted, the midfielder responded with a message of resilience and unity.

“Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch,” she wrote.

The incident in question involved stolen cash from rooms occupied by Okoronkwo, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie and team captain Rasheedat Ajibade at the Marriott Hotel. The team has since moved on to Rabat for the tournament.

In a fresh twist, reports indicate that a suspect has been arrested and has confessed to the crime. According to journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh, the individual is expected to return the stolen money as legal proceedings continue.

Udoh also urged football authorities, including FIFA and CAF, to take firm action against the racist abuse directed at the Nigerian international, describing it as unacceptable.

Despite the off-field controversy, the Super Falcons remain firmly focused on their mission. Under coach Justine Madugu, Nigeria are aiming for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

They begin their Group C campaign against Malawi on Tuesday, before facing Zambia and Egypt in what promises to be a demanding group stage.
