Panic swept through the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, early Monday after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded beneath a parked vehicle, triggering chaos among traders and residents.

The Lagos State Police Command said it moved swiftly to contain the situation, deploying its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and sealing off the area to prevent further danger.

Police authorities revealed that the device was allegedly planted under the passenger side of the vehicle and detonated when the engine was started, causing a sudden blast that disrupted activity in the busy commercial hub.

Security operatives immediately conducted a thorough sweep of the market to check for additional վտանգs. Officials later confirmed that no other explosive devices were found, easing tensions among traders and locals.

One person sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the victim is in stable condition.

The Baale of Oke Mushin, Tajudeen Faronbi, said he alerted security agencies as soon as he received reports of the explosion, prompting a rapid emergency response.

Armed police officers have since been deployed to maintain order, while forensic specialists recovered fragments of the device as part of an ongoing investigation.

Authorities have urged residents and traders to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation is under control as efforts continue to determine the source of the explosion.
