Ondo State Govt Cracks Down on Sign-Out Excesses, Withholds WASSCE Results, Expels 17 Students

Government cites viral video of uniform-tearing, unruly celebrations as it enforces strict discipline across Akure schools.

The Ondo State Government has taken firm disciplinary action against 17 graduating secondary school students, withholding their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and expelling them over misconduct during sign-out celebrations.

The decision, announced by the state Ministry of Education, follows an incident involving final-year students who reportedly engaged in disorderly behaviour after completing their examinations. Authorities said the students were captured in a viral video tearing their school uniforms, chanting slogans, and acting in ways deemed unacceptable within the standards of school discipline.

Those sanctioned are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, all based in Akure, the state capital.

According to the ministry, the penalties—including the seizure of examination results and testimonials alongside expulsion—are intended to serve as a deterrent and reinforce discipline within public secondary schools.

The government emphasized its commitment to upholding moral standards in the education system, warning that acts of indiscipline, especially during celebratory periods, will not be tolerated.
