Viral remarks on bride price, luxury demands and marital control ignite debate on culture, gender norms and domestic violence.
A Nigerian mother has stirred intense public debate after a video of her making sweeping financial demands for her daughter’s marriage went viral on social media.
In the footage, the woman declared that any man seeking her daughter’s hand in marriage must pay a bride price of $10,000, which she equated to about ₦350 million. She stressed that the amount was “only the bride price,” arguing that it reflects the cost and effort invested in raising and grooming her daughter.
She further stated that the prospective groom would be required to pay an additional $50,000, which she described as compensation for breastfeeding and childcare, and also provide a brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser as part of the marriage arrangements.
The woman insisted that her demands did not amount to selling her daughter, claiming that she retained the right to intervene if the marriage failed. According to her, placing a high financial value on marriage would make the husband appreciate his wife’s worth and discourage mistreatment.
Her comments, which also included threats of family intervention in cases of abuse, have drawn sharp criticism from many Nigerians. While some social media users defended her stance as a reflection of personal choice and cultural expression, others condemned it as excessive, materialistic and harmful, particularly for appearing to justify or trivialise domestic violence.
Women’s rights advocates and cultural commentators have also weighed in, warning that placing extreme financial conditions on marriage could reinforce unhealthy power dynamics and commercialise relationships meant to be built on mutual respect and consent.
The viral video has once again brought national attention to ongoing conversations around bride price, evolving cultural practices, gender equality and the responsibilities of families in promoting safe and respectful marriages.
