Party moves to lock in loyalty, impose strict sanctions, and end post-election defections as coalition talks reach final stage

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rolled out a tough anti-defection policy that will compel all its flagbearers and candidates to sign a binding agreement aimed at safeguarding the party’s mandate before and after the 2027 general elections.

Among those expected to append their signatures are former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other key political figures who have recently aligned with the party’s growing coalition.

The move is part of a broader internal reform strategy designed to halt the persistent wave of defections that has long weakened opposition parties after elections.

Party insiders say the agreement will legally tie candidates to the NDC throughout their tenure if elected, while also prohibiting them from supporting or endorsing rival parties during electoral contests. The pact carries stiff penalties for violations, including loss of party ticket and forfeiture of mandate.

Speaking on the development, the NDC National Chairman described the policy as a necessary step to restore discipline, strengthen voter confidence, and put an end to the practice of politicians using smaller parties as mere “special purpose vehicles” before jumping ship after victory.

He added that ongoing coalition discussions with Obi, Kwankwaso, and other influential leaders are at an advanced stage, with the anti-defection pact forming a central condition for partnership.

The party is set to officially unveil the agreement in Abuja next week, where all candidates are expected to participate in a public signing ceremony.
