Thousands cross from Morocco by land and sea, leaving deaths, chaos, and renewed pressure on Europe’s migration policies

Spain has rushed military reinforcements to its North African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of migrants stormed the border from Morocco in a dramatic mass crossing that has strained security and humanitarian resources.

Authorities say between 2,000 and 3,000 people entered Ceuta within a short period, slipping past border controls by swimming around coastal barriers, clinging to inflatable tubes, or forcing their way through entry points. The scale and speed of the influx overwhelmed border officials and emergency responders.

At least nine deaths have been reported in connection with the crossings, raising fresh concerns about the dangers faced by migrants attempting the journey.

In response, Spanish security forces—backed by military personnel—have moved to restore order, while overcrowded reception centres struggle to cope with the sudden surge. Local officials warn the enclave’s limited infrastructure is under severe strain.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to visit Ceuta as Madrid intensifies coordination with Moroccan authorities to curb further crossings and stabilise the situation.

The incident is one of the largest migrant influxes into Ceuta in recent years and has reignited debate across Europe over border control, migration policy, and cooperation with neighbouring countries.
