Troops Arrest Over 20 Suspected Drug Peddlers in Abia Crackdown

Joint military operation targets illicit drug trade, oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Ukwa West

Troops of the 144 Battalion (Rear), operating under Operation Eastern Sanity, have arrested 21 suspected illicit drug peddlers during a coordinated security operation at Owaza Mammy Market in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

The raid, which took place on Tuesday, May 25, 2026, was based on credible intelligence indicating that the market and adjoining bush areas were being used as a hub for multiple criminal activities, including crude oil theft, illegal petroleum dealings, pipeline vandalism, and drug trafficking.

The operation was conducted as a joint task force effort involving personnel of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy Component, and the Nigerian Air Force 511 Quick Response Group, underscoring the multi-agency approach to tackling insecurity in the region.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Abia State, Mazinho Attah, the raid was carefully coordinated to disrupt and dismantle criminal networks operating within the area.

Military authorities confirmed that the suspects were apprehended during the sweep of the market and surrounding locations believed to be strongholds for illicit activities.

The arrested individuals are currently in custody and are expected to undergo further investigation and screening to determine their level of involvement in the suspected criminal network.

Operation Eastern Sanity has continued to intensify its operations across the South-East, targeting oil theft syndicates, drug traffickers, and other criminal elements undermining security and economic stability in the region.
