Deaths linked to security operatives spark outrage, as Nigeria calls for transparent investigation and warns against profiling.
The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg has demanded urgent investigations following the deaths of two Nigerian nationals, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, in separate incidents involving South African security operatives—incidents that have reignited concerns over xenophobic tensions and possible abuse of authority.
According to the consulate, Emmanuel died on April 20 after reportedly sustaining injuries allegedly inflicted by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). While details surrounding the incident remain unclear, the development has sparked alarm within the Nigerian community.
In a separate case, Andrew was arrested on April 19 in the Booysens area of Pretoria after an alleged altercation with officers of the Tshwane Metro Police. His death was later confirmed when his body was discovered at the Pretoria Central Mortuary, raising serious questions about events following his arrest.
Reacting to the incidents, Nigerian Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche described the developments as deeply troubling, noting that they have left families, diplomats, and the wider Nigerian community in shock.
She confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged with the South African Police Service and called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to carry out a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation.
Okey-Uche stressed that regardless of any allegations, due process must be upheld, insisting that no individual should be denied a fair hearing or subjected to unlawful treatment.
The consulate also cautioned against the growing trend of stereotyping Nigerians as criminals, describing such profiling as dangerous and unacceptable.
While engagements with relevant South African authorities continue, the Consul-General urged Nigerians residing in the country to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative, assuring that the consulate is working to ensure justice and support for the affected families.
