Attackers block victim’s vehicle and open fire moments after he leaves exam hall; university distances itself, police launch investigation
Benin City was thrown into shock on Sunday, May 10, 2026, after a part-time Political Science student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was shot dead in a brazen daylight attack just outside the institution’s Ugbowo campus gate.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been officially disclosed, had reportedly just completed his semester examinations when he was ambushed. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants, driving another vehicle, intercepted and blocked his Mercedes-Benz GLK before opening fire at close range while he remained inside the car.
The student died instantly, slumping over the steering wheel as the attack sent panic rippling through the usually busy campus entrance. Students, traders, and passersby fled the area amid the chaos.
In response, UNIBEN authorities quickly distanced the institution from the incident, stressing that the killing occurred outside university premises. The management also suggested the attack may be linked to cult-related violence, while urging students and staff to remain calm and go about their normal activities.
Although the Edo State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, security sources confirm that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident has reignited concerns over recurring violent episodes around the university environment, particularly those associated with cultism. Occurring in broad daylight and at the campus entrance, the killing has deepened anxiety among students and residents.
Further details are expected as law enforcement authorities continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
