WhatsApp has begun rolling out its long-anticipated username feature, marking a major shift in how users connect on the platform without exposing their phone numbers.

The update allows users to create unique usernames that can be shared in place of their personal numbers when initiating chats. Despite the change, a valid phone number will still be required to set up and maintain a WhatsApp account.

In a bid to protect user privacy, WhatsApp confirmed that usernames will remain optional and there will be no public directory. This means users can only be contacted if their exact username is known, reducing the risk of unsolicited messages.

To curb impersonation, the platform is also reserving certain usernames for public figures, brands, and verified accounts. Additionally, users may be able to align their WhatsApp usernames with those used on Instagram or Facebook, where available.

The rollout will happen in phases over the coming months, with access limited to users on the latest version of the app. The feature is designed to give users more control over their identity while simplifying how they connect with others online.
