The defendant was arraigned on four counts including conspiracy, impersonation, and obtaining money by false pretence.

A suspected Internet fraudster, Samson Onaolapo, has been arraigned by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Annex, Alagbon–Ikoyi, Lagos, over an alleged $7,000 online romance scam.

Onaolapo, popularly described as a “Yahoo boy,” was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Alexander Owoeye, on charges bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, and impersonation.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all four counts when the charges were read to him in court.

According to the prosecution counsel, Williams Tijani, the defendant allegedly used the email address ScothSparks@yahoo.com to impersonate an American citizen identified as Scott Spark.

Tijani told the court that Onaolapo allegedly defrauded two victims, Patti Anna and Linda Morgan, of the sum of $7,000 through the false identity.

The prosecution further alleged that the defendant knowingly acquired, retained, and took possession of the proceeds of the crime.

It was also disclosed that the offences were allegedly committed between 2019 and 2024, and that the funds were unlawfully obtained.

The case was adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
