Editorial Policy

About Our Editorial Standards

Daily Observer is an independent news publication providing news and information on developments in Nigeria and around the world.

Our editorial goal is to provide readers with timely, useful, accurate, and responsibly presented journalism covering national affairs, politics, business, technology, entertainment, sports, community issues, and other matters of public interest.

We aim to distinguish factual reporting from opinion, commentary, analysis, and material attributed to other sources.

Accuracy and Verification

Accuracy is a fundamental part of our journalism.

Before publishing information, our editorial team makes reasonable efforts to verify important facts using available and reliable sources. Depending on the nature of a story, these may include official statements, government agencies, public records, court documents, direct interviews, eyewitness accounts, and credible news sources.

We do not knowingly publish information that we believe to be false or misleading.

When information cannot be independently verified, we seek to make the attribution or uncertainty clear to readers rather than presenting an unverified claim as established fact.

Sources and Attribution

Daily Observer identifies the source of information where appropriate and possible.

When a story is based on an official statement, press release, interview, public document, or report from another publication or organization, we aim to clearly attribute the information.

We respect the distinction between original reporting and information obtained from other sources. Where appropriate, links or references to source material may be provided so readers can better understand the basis of a report.

Breaking News

Breaking news can develop rapidly, and information may change as events unfold.

Initial reports may contain limited information. As new facts become available, Daily Observer may update a story to improve accuracy, add context, correct errors, or reflect significant developments.

Readers should understand that an early breaking-news report may be updated as more reliable information becomes available.

Headlines

Our headlines are intended to accurately reflect the main subject of an article.

We aim to avoid headlines that deliberately misrepresent the contents of a story or create a misleading impression.

Corrections and Updates

If we identify a factual error in a published article, we seek to correct it promptly.

Material corrections may be noted within the article where appropriate. Minor changes, such as spelling, grammar, formatting, or clarity improvements, may be made without a separate correction notice.

When a significant story changes substantially because new information becomes available, we may update the article and provide additional context.

For more information, readers may refer to our Corrections Policy.

Fairness and Right of Response

When reporting allegations, disputes, investigations, or matters that may significantly affect a person's or organization's reputation, we seek to present relevant information fairly and attribute allegations to their sources.

Where appropriate, individuals or organizations mentioned in a report may be given an opportunity to respond.

A person's inclusion in a news report does not by itself imply that Daily Observer has determined that an allegation is true.

Opinion and Commentary

Opinion, commentary, analysis, and other non-news content should be distinguishable from straightforward news reporting.

Where applicable, such material is identified so readers can understand the nature of the content.

User-Generated Content and Social Media

Information obtained from social media or user-generated content is treated with caution.

Social media posts, photographs, videos, and other online material may be reviewed as potential sources of information, but their existence online does not automatically establish that the information is accurate.

Where possible, important claims are independently verified before being presented as established facts.

Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools

Digital tools, including artificial intelligence tools, may be used to assist with certain editorial or production tasks where appropriate.

Such tools do not replace editorial responsibility. Published material remains subject to human review and editorial oversight.

We do not intentionally present AI-generated material as independently verified reporting.

Independence and Conflicts of Interest

Editorial decisions should be based on newsworthiness, public interest, accuracy, and relevance rather than improper influence.

Staff and contributors should avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise the credibility or fairness of their reporting.

Sponsored, promotional, or commercial material should be distinguishable from independent editorial content where applicable.

Privacy and Sensitive Information

We take reasonable care when publishing personal information, particularly information involving children, victims, private individuals, or sensitive circumstances.

Information may be published when there is a legitimate public-interest reason, while unnecessary exposure of private information is avoided.

Editorial Responsibility

Every published story carries editorial responsibility. We encourage readers to contact us when they identify a factual error or believe important information requires clarification.

Our editorial policies may be reviewed and updated as our newsroom and publication practices develop.
