Force condemns fatal shooting in Delta, vows justice as ASP faces disciplinary action and possible prosecution
The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, and announced immediate disciplinary action against the officer involved.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has sparked outrage, prompting the police leadership to assure the public that justice will be served.
According to preliminary findings, operatives from the Effurun Area Command had responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The report indicated that a suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
However, while officers were attempting to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of established police procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
In response, the Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law. He assured that the matter would be handled transparently and in accordance with due process.
The police also urged members of the public to remain calm as investigations and disciplinary proceedings continue.
Reaffirming its stance, the Force emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward extrajudicial killings, abuse of power, and any misconduct capable of eroding public trust.
