Suspected kingpins, trainees nabbed as investigators reveal recruits were lured with fake job offers and held under strict control in Karu facility

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismantled a suspected internet fraud training hub, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo academy,” in Abuja, arresting 31 individuals in a coordinated raid.

The operation, carried out by EFCC operatives at Becki Estate in Karu, targeted what authorities described as a structured cybercrime training centre. Among those arrested were two suspected masterminds believed to be running the operation, alongside several trainees undergoing tutorials in online fraud.

Items recovered during the sting include 18 laptops, multiple mobile phones, and other digital tools allegedly used to facilitate fraudulent activities.

Preliminary findings indicate that some recruits were allegedly deceived into joining the operation. They were reportedly brought in from Benue State under the guise of legitimate employment opportunities, only to be confined within the facility and initiated into cybercrime.

Investigators further revealed that the recruits’ movements were tightly controlled. Communication with the outside world was allegedly restricted, with phones confiscated and strict surveillance imposed within the premises.

There are also reports that the environment within the facility was harsh, with some recruits allegedly subjected to punitive measures aimed at enforcing obedience and participation.

The EFCC has confirmed that all suspects will face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations, as the agency intensifies its nationwide clampdown on organised cybercrime networks.
