Governor cites unity, peace, and collective interest as reasons for stepping aside ahead of 2027 race
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary ahead of the 2027 elections, signaling a major shift in the state’s evolving political landscape.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Fubara said his decision came after extensive consultations with family members, political allies, and close associates. He affirmed his commitment to the party, promising to fully support whoever emerges as the APC flagbearer.
According to the governor, the move reflects a conscious choice to place the broader interest of Rivers State above personal ambition.
“Leadership demands sacrifice, and personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people,” he stated, stressing that peace, stability, and unity in the state remain paramount.
Fubara also thanked his supporters for their loyalty and understanding, explaining that his recent silence on political matters was both deliberate and strategic, guided by what he described as the higher interest of the state.
He further expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership for their continued support, urging party members to remain united and focused. He described the APC as a “collective home” that must be strengthened through cooperation.
Amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, Fubara maintained that his withdrawal should not be seen as a sign of weakness or fear, but rather as a calculated step aimed at preserving unity and fostering stability in Rivers State.
