“I Will Not Be Intimidated” — Seun Okinbaloye Blasts Wike Over ‘Shoot’ Remark

Channels TV anchor defends press freedom, warns against dangerous rhetoric after FCT Minister’s controversial outburst

Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has firmly pushed back against Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, declaring he will neither be afraid nor silenced following the minister’s explosive comment suggesting he would have “shot” him.

Okinbaloye made the statement on Sunday amid widespread outrage sparked by Wike’s remarks during a recent media chat. The minister had reacted angrily to the journalist’s warning on Politics Today that the emergence of a one-party system could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

In his reaction, Wike said he would have “broken the TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye — a statement that quickly drew condemnation from rights groups and the public. Amnesty International described the comment as “reckless and dangerous,” warning that such rhetoric could embolden attacks on journalists.

Responding to the controversy, Okinbaloye stood his ground, reiterating his concerns about the health of Nigeria’s democracy.

“The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting,” he said. “This is not directed at any particular party, but at all Nigerians who believe in the country’s progress.”

He disclosed that Wike later reached out to clarify that his remarks were not intended as conveyed. However, Okinbaloye stressed that such language has no place in a democratic society.

“Violent rhetoric or threats are never appropriate responses to dissent,” he said.

Drawing a clear line, the broadcaster added: “Let me be clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated. Disagreements are part of democracy, but they must never descend into hostility or harm.”

Okinbaloye reaffirmed his commitment to journalism, vowing to continue asking tough questions and holding those in power accountable.
