Family warns Nigerians and global supporters against fraudulent Facebook and Instagram pages falsely claiming to represent the detained IPOB leader.

The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued an urgent public safety warning over the increasing spread of fake social media accounts allegedly impersonating him across major platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu Family, the family cautioned Nigerians and the international community to be vigilant, noting that the fraudulent accounts are designed to appear official. According to the family, many of the pages deploy deceptive branding, including familiar logos and misleading location tags such as Nairobi and Sokoto, to lure unsuspecting followers.

The statement stressed that since Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s rendition and subsequent detention in June 2021, he has not operated, managed, or authorised any social media account. The family clarified that he has no verified or active presence on Facebook, Instagram, or any other digital platform and does not post personal messages, updates, or engage with the public online.

Describing the situation as a “coordinated and sustained deception,” the Kanu family alleged that the impersonators are using these fake accounts to harvest personal data, circulate misinformation, and damage the image of both Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB. The family further warned that engagement with such pages could expose genuine supporters to surveillance, harassment, or possible arrest.

“We strongly urge members of the public to immediately unfollow and disengage from any account claiming to speak for or represent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the statement said. “These accounts have no link whatsoever to him, IPOB, or the Kanu family.”

The family also advised users to report the pages to social media platforms as impersonation or scam accounts and to rely only on verified IPOB communication outlets and trusted media partners, including Radio Biafra, for accurate and authentic information.

While cautioning that interaction with the fake accounts could pose serious personal risks, the statement reaffirmed Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s commitment to what it described as the peaceful and non-violent struggle for the self-determination of Biafrans.

The family concluded by renewing its call for the unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader and vowed to continue exposing what it termed “deceptive tactics” allegedly aimed at misleading the public and undermining the movement.
