Police Confirm ₦100m Error Transfer to IGP’s Son, Say Funds Fully Returned to Anambra Govt

Force PRO says payment from Anambra security vote was mistakenly credited, reversed immediately, and reported to EFCC as questions linger over how the transfer occurred.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that a ₦100 million transfer into the personal bank account of Mr. Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, was a mistake and has been fully returned to the Anambra State Government.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the money—allegedly traced to Anambra State’s security vote—was erroneously credited to Victor Egbetokun’s account. According to him, the transaction was reversed immediately after the recipient noticed the unusual inflow.

Hundeyin explained that Victor promptly alerted his bank, ensured the funds were refunded, printed his bank statement to document the reversal, and subsequently closed the affected account. He also petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), requesting an investigation into how the transfer occurred.

The police spokesman said the clarification became necessary after claims circulated online alleging that the IGP’s son received funds from Anambra State. He noted that he personally contacted Victor after the allegations surfaced and that the issue was later addressed publicly during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where the police described the transfer as an error already corrected.

While the NPF insists the money was returned without delay and properly reported, the incident has sparked wider public concern over financial controls, particularly how a large payment from a state security vote account could be routed to a private individual’s bank account.

As of the time of reporting, the EFCC has not issued a public statement on the petition or confirmed whether a formal investigation has commenced.
