Diplomatic consultations spotlight electoral integrity, inclusive participation, and growing global interest in Nigeria’s democratic process

The United Kingdom High Commission in Nigeria has stepped up early diplomatic engagements with key political stakeholders and electoral authorities as momentum builds toward the 2027 general elections.

Leading the delegation, High Commissioner Richard Montgomery and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever held high-level meetings with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside prominent political figures.

Among those consulted were former Vice President and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, as well as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, in addition to other institutional and political actors.

Discussions during the engagements centered on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework, ensuring credible and transparent elections, and promoting broader political inclusion across the country.

The UK High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peaceful and accountable electoral processes through sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The outreach reflects increasing international attention on Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather pace.
