Veteran journalist succumbs to injuries sustained while returning from official assignment in Alkaleri
The media community in Bauchi State has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of Mr. Kani Ben, a cameraman with Channels Television, who passed away nine days after a tragic road accident involving journalists on official duty.
The crash occurred while a team of media professionals was returning from covering North-East development projects in Yelwan Duguri, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Daily Observer gathered that Kani Ben died in the early hours of Sunday, around 4:00 a.m., at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), where he had been receiving intensive treatment. He was said to have undergone surgery following suspected spinal cord injuries sustained in the accident.
Until his death, Kani Ben had served with Channels Television in Bauchi for about 13 years, marking his first and only posting with the media organisation. Colleagues describe him as humble, calm, hardworking, and highly dependable — a quiet professional whose commitment to duty earned him respect across the newsroom and beyond.
He died in the line of duty, while serving his organisation and the Nigerian public. He is survived by his wife and two children.
His passing once again highlights the real dangers journalists face daily in the course of gathering information and serving society.
