Outrage grows in Eda-Oniyo as residents say ₦10.5 million ransom and concessions failed to secure release of victims, mostly women and children
Residents of Eda-Oniyo Community in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State have taken to the streets in a peaceful protest over the continued detention of 16 abducted church members, 36 days after they were kidnapped during a worship service.
The demonstrators—comprising community leaders, women, youths and families of the victims—voiced anger and frustration, accusing authorities of inaction despite the prolonged ordeal and efforts made to secure the victims’ freedom.
The incident occurred on April 28, 2026, when armed men stormed a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) during service. The presiding pastor was killed in the attack, while 16 worshippers were forcibly taken away.
According to residents, the kidnappers initially demanded ₦1 billion, later reducing it to ₦150 million and then ₦50 million. In a desperate bid to save their loved ones, the community raised ₦10.5 million along with other items requested by the abductors. However, the victims remain in captivity.
Speaking during the protest, community leader Ayodele Ajayi said residents had stretched themselves to the limit financially and emotionally, with no result.
“Our people have been held for 36 days. We contributed everything we could and paid ₦10.5 million, yet they were not released. Instead, the kidnappers are asking for more,” he said.
Ajayi added that the victims include mostly women and two young boys, urging government authorities at all levels to intervene urgently.
Another resident, Mrs Ajayi, expressed deep concern over the condition of those still in captivity, noting that young children and elderly individuals are among them.
The protest underscores growing tension in the community, as families continue to wait anxiously for the safe return of their loved ones amid fears for their wellbeing.
