Bethi’s late strike seals dominant display after Ndiaye’s early penalty as Algeria take early control in Group A

Algeria made a strong statement at the start of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026 journey, defeating Senegal 2–0 in a composed and clinical Group A opener in Rabat on Sunday.

Despite Senegal enjoying slightly more of the ball, it was Algeria who looked sharper and more decisive in the final third. Their disciplined approach and attacking efficiency ultimately made the difference in a game where chances were at a premium.

The breakthrough came early—though in unusual fashion. Senegal were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute, and captain Nguenar Ndiaye stepped up confidently to convert. However, that early lead did little to unsettle Algeria, who gradually grew into the game with purpose and control.

As the first half wore on, Algeria found their rhythm, combining solid defensive organisation with increasing attacking intent. They limited Senegal’s threat effectively while forcing multiple saves at the other end.

After the restart, Algeria returned with greater urgency, pushing higher up the pitch and probing for an equaliser. Tactical substitutions in the second half injected fresh energy into their play, helping them sustain pressure on a Senegal side that struggled to break through.

Their persistence paid off five minutes from time. Mélissa Bethi calmly finished off a well-worked move after being set up by Lina Boussaha, doubling Algeria’s lead and effectively sealing the result.

Senegal attempted a late response, but Algeria remained compact and composed, seeing out the game to secure a clean sheet and all three points.

The victory puts Algeria in a strong early position in Group A ahead of a high-profile clash against hosts Morocco. Senegal, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they face Kenya in their next outing.
