Cristiano Ronaldo Bids Farewell to Portugal’s No. 7 Shirt After 23 Years

The 41-year-old football icon has announced his decision to hand over his famous shirt number, bringing an emotional chapter of his international career to a close after more than two decades.

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he is handing back Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt after 23 years representing his country, signalling the end of a remarkable chapter in his international football career.

The 41-year-old forward made the announcement in an emotional Instagram video, reflecting on a journey that began with his senior debut in August 2003 and transformed him into one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Ronaldo leaves behind an extraordinary international record, having scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both world records.

He described wearing the number seven shirt as a privilege and responsibility, saying it never belonged to him alone but was something he had the honour of representing on behalf of the Portuguese people.

In his words;Today the time has come to pass it on to the future."

The announcement comes after a difficult spell with the national team.

In September, Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s camp after learning he would not start a Nations League match against Denmark.

The incident resulted in a £215 fine and a 30-day suspension, adding to speculation about his international future.

The Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) has promised to organise a fitting tribute to celebrate Ronaldo’s contribution to the national team.

In a statement, the federation said it would not allow his farewell to pass without due recognition, describing his career as one that had given the country so much.

Portugal are expected to announce their squad for upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales on Friday.

During his international career, Ronaldo featured in six European Championships, helping Portugal reach the final in 2004 before leading them to their historic triumph in 2016. He also captained the national team from 2008 and won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019, as well as the 2025 edition.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Portugal never progressed beyond the World Cup semi-finals during his time with the team.

Ronaldo’s announcement follows the international retirement of his long-time rival, Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who received an emotional farewell before a crowd of 85,000 in Buenos Aires in October.

Together, the two football icons have defined an era of international football, leaving behind records and achievements that will be difficult for future generations to match.
