Vietnamese Baby Goes Viral After Being Pictured Holding Contraceptive Device That Failed to Prevent His Birth

A 34-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy despite having an intrauterine device (IUD) fitted two years earlier. Although the photograph sparked worldwide amusement, doctors later clarified that the newborn was deliberately handed the device for the viral picture.

A newborn baby in Vietnam became an internet sensation after a photograph showed him gripping the very contraceptive device that was supposed to prevent his birth.

The unusual image, which attracted widespread attention and amusement on social media, appeared to show the little boy arriving in the world with evidence of his mother's failed birth control in his tiny hands.

However, the story behind the photograph is just as fascinating as the image itself.

The incident occurred in June 2020 at Hai Phong International Hospital in Vietnam, where a 34-year-old woman delivered a healthy baby boy weighing approximately 3.2 kilogrammes despite having an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted two years earlier.

An IUD is a small contraceptive device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Although highly effective, it does not offer absolute protection against conception.

According to reports, doctors discovered that the woman's IUD had shifted from its original position, allowing the pregnancy to occur despite the contraceptive device being in place.

During the delivery, the displaced IUD was expelled alongside the newborn, creating an unusual situation that caught the attention of the medical team.

But the baby did not actually emerge from the womb holding the contraceptive device, as the viral photograph appeared to suggest.

Obstetrician Dr Tran Viet Phuong, who attended the delivery, reportedly noticed the unusual coincidence and decided to capture a memorable photograph.

Hospital staff subsequently placed the IUD in the newborn's tiny hand, and the baby naturally gripped it, creating the now-famous image.

The photograph quickly travelled across social media platforms, attracting reactions from people who joked that the newborn had arrived ready to present evidence of how he managed to beat birth control.

Some described the baby as a fighter who had defeated contraception, while others joked that he was already keeping receipts from the moment he was born.

Beyond the humour, the incident highlights the fact that pregnancies can occasionally occur even when contraceptive devices such as IUDs are used.

The photograph remains a memorable example of how an unusual moment in a hospital delivery room can capture the world's attention.

And while the little boy was never actually born holding the device, his photograph certainly gave the internet a story it would not forget anytime soon.
