Falcons Stage Stunning Comeback to Beat Cameroon 3-1 in Pre-WAFCON Clash

Nigeria overturns first-leg deficit to dominate Indomitable Lionesses in Yaoundé ahead of Women's Africa Cup of Nations

Following a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their pre-WAFCON friendly series, the Super Falcons bounced back to defeat Cameroon 3-1 at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé, reaffirming their continental prowess under coach Justine Madugu.

Cameroon opened the scoring in the seventh minute, reviving memories of past victories, but Nigeria quickly regained control. Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo equalized in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to convert a precise cross from Rinsola Babajide. Babajide then turned scorer herself, giving Nigeria the lead in the 43rd minute after a scramble inside the box.

Coach Madugu reshaped the midfield at halftime, implementing a high press and closing central channels, forcing Cameroon to rely on hopeful deliveries. Wide outlets, especially captain Rasheedat Ajibade, consistently tested the opposition’s defense throughout the second half.

Michelle Alozie sealed the 3-1 victory in the 64th minute with a soaring header from Ajibade’s teasing cross, completing a swift turnaround after the first-leg setback. The loss ended Cameroon’s 11-match unbeaten streak, dating back to a 2-1 friendly defeat to France in November 2024.

Both teams used the two-match series as preparation for the 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled from March 17 to April 3.
