New agreement boosts intelligence sharing, speeds cargo clearance, and intensifies crackdown on smuggling and cross-border crime
Nigeria and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have formalised a strategic Customs Cooperation Arrangement designed to enhance trade efficiency, reinforce border security, and combat transnational criminal activities.
The deal establishes closer collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Netherlands Customs Administration, with a strong focus on intelligence sharing, capacity building, and the exchange of modern customs practices. Officials say the partnership will improve operational standards and align both countries with global best practices in customs management.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, described the agreement as a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive to modernise its border operations. He noted that the partnership would strengthen supply chain security, streamline cargo clearance processes, and promote legitimate trade flows between both nations.
Beyond trade facilitation, the arrangement is expected to bolster joint enforcement efforts against smuggling, customs fraud, and other illicit cross-border activities, while improving overall efficiency in port and border operations.
The move underscores both countries’ commitment to building a secure, transparent, and business-friendly trading environment.
