OAU student issues viral apology after publicly accusing classmate of rape without evidence, sparking debates over accountability and online harassment.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is in the spotlight after a female student retracted a public rape accusation against a male classmate and issued a viral apology.
The controversy began when Adeife, a student in the Department of English, accused David, a 200-level student, of rape and being a “rape apologist” on social media. The posts, which included David’s personal phone number, led to a flood of abusive calls and messages, seriously affecting his reputation and mental health.
David, rather than responding publicly, documented the harassment and reported the matter to the OAU Senate. When Adeife was summoned to provide evidence, she could not substantiate her claims, leading to a swift unraveling of the allegation.
In a 41-second video that circulated widely on Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), Adeife apologized, attributing her actions to acting in the “heat of the moment” and admitting the accusation was false. While reactions online were mixed, with some questioning the sincerity of her apology, the OAU Senate has involved her department and parents, though no formal disciplinary actions have been announced.
The incident has ignited heated discussions on social media, with calls for stricter consequences for false accusations to protect victims of reputational harm and prevent misuse of social platforms.
