Former Super Eagles coach says Ademola Lookman’s AFCON performances and goal contributions now place him on the same pedestal as Victor Osimhen.

Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has said Ademola Lookman has grown to rival Victor Osimhen’s influence in the Nigerian national team, describing the winger as a player capable of becoming a central figure at Atlético Madrid.

Peseiro noted that Lookman’s performances at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations were just as decisive as Osimhen’s, who has long been regarded as Nigeria’s standout star.

“Osimhen is the star, but Lookman has not been behind him. Lookman has scored more goals. Now they are both key figures,” Peseiro said.

The former Nigeria coach also highlighted Lookman’s impact at club level, pointing to his historic hat-trick in the Europa League final for Atalanta as evidence of his big-game mentality.

Lookman has been a consistent performer for the Super Eagles across AFCON tournaments, contributing to 11 goals — six goals and five assists — in 13 appearances, helping Nigeria secure both silver and bronze medals.

Peseiro, who gave Lookman regular opportunities during his tenure, dismissed claims that the winger is difficult to manage. Instead, he described him as humble, disciplined, and highly responsive when trusted on the pitch.

“Lookman does not act like a star; he is very easy to manage. You just have to let him be free,” he said.

According to Peseiro, Lookman has the potential to produce outstanding seasons and establish a lasting legacy at Atlético Madrid.
