Former senator questions Obi’s ability to manage national crises, citing alleged pattern of avoiding party conflicts

Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, questioning his readiness to lead Nigeria amid mounting political pressures.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Melaye challenged Obi’s leadership credentials, arguing that his handling of internal party disputes raises concerns about his capacity to govern a complex nation like Nigeria.

Reacting to Obi’s recent political moves and reported party alignments, Melaye accused the former Anambra State governor of sidestepping difficult situations, particularly during periods of internal crisis. He stressed that true leadership demands resilience and the willingness to confront challenges head-on.

“Peter Obi excused himself from tough situations. If he cannot face party tribulations and crisis, how does he intend to handle Nigeria? Because Nigeria wahala pass ADC problems,” Melaye wrote.

The former lawmaker emphasized that Nigeria’s governance challenges far outweigh internal party disagreements, insisting that anyone aspiring to lead the country must demonstrate endurance, patience, and the ability to navigate intense political pressure.

Melaye further argued that Obi’s political trajectory has been shaped more by favourable openings than by hard-fought contests. He referenced Obi’s tenure as governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), his role as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and his emergence as the Labour Party’s flagbearer in 2023.

According to him, these milestones did not reflect what he described as rigorous internal political battles, raising doubts about Obi’s preparedness for Nigeria’s demanding political landscape.

He also criticised Obi’s movement across political parties, suggesting it reflects a tendency to seek more advantageous platforms rather than confront challenges within existing structures. Melaye went further to allege links between some political platforms and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), though he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

Melaye’s remarks have sparked fresh reactions online, as conversations around opposition politics, party realignments, and the 2027 electoral landscape continue to gather momentum.
