30-year-old suspect allegedly killed his girlfriend during an argument over HIV infection before wrapping her remains in nylon and concealing them in his apartment toilet.

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old man, identified as Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, simply identified as Chinyere.

The woman’s surname, age and residential address were yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.

Emmanuel was arrested at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, following information that he had allegedly killed his girlfriend.

The arrest was disclosed by the spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement issued on Tuesday at the Command’s headquarters in GRA, Enugu.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on September 19, 2026, when the suspect allegedly struck the deceased on the head with a pestle during an argument.

The argument was reportedly linked to allegations over who infected whom with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Police said Emmanuel allegedly concealed the woman’s remains after her death by wrapping them in nylon and locking them inside the toilet of his apartment.

The situation was reportedly uncovered after a strong offensive odour from the decomposing body began attracting the attention of neighbours.

According to the police statement, the neighbours eventually forced open the door and apprehended the suspect before the arrival of police operatives.

The victim’s remains were subsequently evacuated and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations of who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),” the statement said.

“He further stated that, during the argument, he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, and subsequently wrapped and dumped her remains inside the toilet.”

The Command said efforts were ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased and trace her relatives.

Police also said investigations were continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators work to conclude the case and determine the appropriate legal action.

Authorities urged members of the public with information about the deceased to come forward and assist the investigation.
