Heavy security presence halts Wuse 2 gathering amid deepening party rift and claims of political pressure
Security operatives on Saturday shut down the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, stopping a planned convention by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aimed at ratifying former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.
Armed police officers barricaded the venue and blocked key access routes from the Wuse and Maitama corridors, leaving delegates and party supporters stranded and unable to enter the premises.
The convention was being organised by a PDP bloc aligned with former Minister Tanimu Turaki, in what sources described as a major move in the party’s unfolding internal power struggle.
Party insiders had earlier alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, threatened to disrupt the event and mounted pressure on the venue’s management to deny the organisers access. However, there has been no official confirmation of these claims.
As of press time, security personnel maintained a strong presence around the area, while uncertainty lingered over whether the convention would hold at a later time or be postponed indefinitely.
