Veteran traditional ruler, journalist, and educationist reigned for nearly five decades in Lagos State

The Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89.

The revered monarch, fondly known as Oba Akran, reportedly died on January 12, 2026, after a brief illness.

His death marks the end of a distinguished reign that spanned almost five decades, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Lagos State.

Oba Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, following the approval of the Lagos State Executive Council in 1976, becoming the 17th Akran of Badagry.

Born on September 18, 1936, the late monarch began his professional career as a teacher in schools across the Badagry Division before transitioning into journalism. He worked with prominent national newspapers, including West African Pilot, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria, where he rose to the position of Acting News Editor (South).

In recognition of his service to the nation, Oba Menu-Toyi I was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 1981. He also received several honorary awards, including an honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D), honoris causa.

Medical personnel attached to the Akran Palace pronounced the monarch dead, after which traditional burial rites commenced in accordance with established customs.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the passing of the monarch
