The NDC presidential candidate says the Obi/Kwankwaso movement will not provide money to party agents to entice voters, warning that vote-buying perpetuates poverty and undermines credible elections.

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that his political movement will not provide money to party agents to induce voters during the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the statement on Monday while responding to questions at a town hall meeting in Sokoto, where he spoke about his approach to the forthcoming elections and the need for a credible electoral process.

The former Anambra State governor described the practice of giving money to voters on election day as vote-buying, arguing that it contributes to the continued cycle of poverty in Nigeria.

“We are not ready to give money to party agents to entice voters. That is vote-buying, and it is part of the reason why poverty continues to rise in the country,” Obi said.

He maintained that elections should be determined by the choices of voters rather than financial inducements, stressing the need for a process in which citizens can freely exercise their franchise.

Obi also assured voters that adequate security arrangements would be put in place to protect them during the 2027 elections.

According to him, efforts would also be made to ensure that votes cast at polling units are properly counted, recorded and protected throughout the electoral process.

The presidential candidate attended the Sokoto town hall meeting alongside his running mate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, as the duo continue engagements with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
