Electoral commission to engage political parties, security agencies, civil society and diplomatic community on voter register, logistics and measures to ensure credible polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Tuesday hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and a World Press Conference as preparations for the 2027 general elections enter the final 100-day countdown.

The high-level engagement, scheduled to take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, is expected to provide Nigerians with a comprehensive update on the commission’s readiness for the polls.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), will lead the briefing alongside key stakeholders in the electoral process, with discussions expected to focus on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, election logistics and measures aimed at safeguarding the credibility and integrity of the elections.

In a statement released ahead of the event, the commission said the meeting underscores its commitment to transparency, public accountability and collaboration with institutions critical to the conduct of free, fair and peaceful elections.

According to INEC, the gathering is designed to keep citizens and electoral stakeholders informed about progress made so far as the country approaches one of its most significant democratic exercises.

“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement noted.

Expected participants include leaders of political parties, security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations and domestic and international election observers.

Also expected are disability rights advocates, traditional and religious leaders, youth groups and media executives, reflecting INEC’s effort to ensure broad-based participation in discussions surrounding the electoral process.

The meeting comes at a crucial stage in the election timetable, as INEC intensifies administrative, technological and logistical arrangements ahead of the nationwide polls.

While the commission did not indicate whether fresh changes to the electoral timetable would be announced, observers believe the event could provide clarity on critical milestones leading up to the elections.

The proceedings, scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, will be broadcast live on major television stations and streamed on INEC’s official social media platforms to allow wider public participation.

INEC added that attendance at the venue would be strictly by invitation, with accredited journalists and invited guests required to present valid identification and accreditation passes at security checkpoints.

With just 100 days left before Nigerians head to the polls, the stakeholders’ meeting is expected to set the tone for increased public engagement and confidence in the electoral process.
