86 personnel depart Abuja as Nigeria deepens regional security role, with more troops set for deployment under ESSMGB

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully airlifted the first batch of Nigerian troops to Guinea-Bissau for deployment under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), in a move that reinforces Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to peacekeeping and regional stability in West Africa.

The initial contingent, comprising 86 military personnel — including 12 officers and 74 soldiers — departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja aboard a NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft. Military authorities disclosed that additional personnel will be transported in subsequent airlift operations as part of a phased deployment strategy.

The ESSMGB is a regional peace support initiative by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), aimed at supporting political stability, strengthening democratic institutions, and maintaining security in Guinea-Bissau, a country that has experienced periodic political unrest and institutional challenges.

Before their departure, the troops underwent final briefings and were formally addressed at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Force Operations Base in Abuja. Senior military officials charged them to conduct themselves with the highest level of professionalism, discipline, and respect for international humanitarian standards, noting that their conduct would reflect directly on Nigeria’s image globally.

They were also reminded of the importance of civil-military relations during peacekeeping operations, with emphasis placed on protecting civilians, respecting local cultures, and working collaboratively with other international partners and host nation authorities.

The deployment once again highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s critical strategic airlift capability, which enables rapid troop movement and logistics support across the region. Defence analysts say this capacity remains a vital component of Nigeria’s leadership in regional security architecture and its ability to respond swiftly to emerging crises within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Nigeria has historically played a leading role in peacekeeping missions across Africa, contributing troops and resources to operations in countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, and The Gambia. The latest deployment to Guinea-Bissau continues that tradition, reflecting Abuja’s broader foreign policy objective of promoting peace, stability, and democratic governance in West Africa.

Security experts note that sustained engagement through missions like the ESSMGB is essential to preventing political instability from escalating into wider regional threats, particularly in a sub-region already grappling with terrorism, coups, and transnational crime.

With the remaining troops expected to be deployed in the coming days, officials say Nigeria remains committed to working with ECOWAS and international partners to ensure that Guinea-Bissau remains on a path toward lasting peace and institutional stability.
