Gunmen reportedly opened fire on workers at a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi LGA, before fleeing the scene.

Three women have been killed and another person injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attackers reportedly stormed the mining site at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday and opened fire on workers at the location before fleeing the area.

The incident was confirmed by Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, who expressed concern over the growing security threat facing residents and workers in the area.

A community member, John Silas, also confirmed the attack, saying the gunmen opened fire on people at the mining site, killing three women and leaving another person injured.

The victims were reportedly at the mining location when the attackers arrived and began shooting.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over the safety of people working and living in mining communities across the area, particularly amid persistent security challenges in parts of Plateau State.

Tengwong called on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers, urging authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

He also stressed the need for stronger security measures to protect residents, workers and other vulnerable communities from further attacks.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Plateau State Police Command detailing the identities of the attackers or confirming any arrests.

The attack adds to ongoing concerns over insecurity in parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly called for stronger protection and faster security responses.
