APC governors say they will not support political arrangements that could undermine President Tinubu’s re-election bid or weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have distanced themselves from any political coalition or alliance involving individuals or opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governors said they remained firmly committed to the APC and would support only candidates officially sponsored by the party at all levels.

The position was announced by the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, after a meeting of the governors in Abuja late Monday night.

Uzodimma said the governors had not entered into any formal agreement with any individual or opposition political party ahead of the 2027 elections.

His declaration comes amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the elections, particularly over the activities of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national leader, Nyesom Wike.

Wike, who is serving in the APC-led Federal Government despite his PDP affiliation, has been promoting a political movement known as the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State and other parts of the country in support of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid.

The coalition has attracted attention because of its reported efforts to bring politicians from different political backgrounds together ahead of the elections.

However, Wike has also been involved in political disagreements with some APC governors.

During a recent media chat, the FCT Minister alleged that Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq were among those working against his political interests.

Wike suggested that the opposition to his political activities was linked to the growing influence of his Rainbow Coalition, which he said was creating a platform for politicians seeking to challenge some candidates being backed by the ruling APC at the governorship and senatorial levels.

The latest declaration by the APC Governors Forum appears to draw a clear line between the party’s official campaign structure and political arrangements outside the APC.

Reading the communique issued after the governors’ meeting, Uzodimma said the forum would not support any alliance or political arrangement capable of creating divided loyalty or undermining the party’s candidates.

“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.

He further made it clear that the governors’ support would be restricted to candidates officially sponsored by the APC.

“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” he added.

According to Uzodimma, the governors would ensure that their campaign activities remained aligned with the party’s national structure and President Tinubu’s re-election strategy.

“The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates. All levels of the party campaign architecture will align with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party,” he said.

The declaration is likely to intensify attention on the political relationship between Wike and APC governors as the 2027 election approaches.

Although Wike has remained a prominent supporter of Tinubu’s re-election effort, his continued identification with the PDP and his efforts to build a broader political coalition have raised questions about how his activities will fit into the APC’s official campaign structure.

For the APC governors, however, Monday’s resolution appears to establish a straightforward position: political support for the 2027 elections must ultimately flow through the party’s official candidates and campaign structure.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the competing political interests within and around the ruling party are expected to become more pronounced as politicians position themselves for presidential, governorship, senatorial and other elective contests.
