Mobile Magistrate Court in Oshodi hands two-month sentence after mass guilty plea over removal of critical iron rods

A Mobile Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos, on Friday sentenced 30 individuals to two months’ imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty to vandalising critical infrastructure along the Alakija Bridge axis.

The convicts were arraigned for unlawfully removing iron rods used in supporting sections of the Alakija Bridge and surrounding areas, including Trade Fair, Orile, and Abule Ado—an act authorities say poses serious risks to public safety and road users.

According to court proceedings, the offenders admitted to the charges when they were brought before the magistrate. Following their guilty pleas, the court handed down a summary sentence of two months in prison to each of them.

The arrests and swift prosecution highlight ongoing efforts by Lagos authorities to clamp down on the vandalism of public infrastructure, which has become a growing concern due to its potential to weaken critical structures and endanger lives.

Officials have repeatedly warned that tampering with bridge components, especially structural iron reinforcements, could lead to partial or total collapse if left unchecked.

Those convicted include: Aminu Muhammed, Alamin Ibrahim, Bashiru Kabiru, Ibrahim Usman, Muritala Abdullahi, Nnana Obi, Umoru Haruna, Monsuru Abubakar, Muktari Aminu, Ayodele Abiodun, Destiny Peter, Akolade Oluwaseun, Raphael Ugoji, Misa Zaki, Kabiru Nosiru, Rabiu Zachariah, Yahaya Abdulrasheed, Olamilekan Mufutau, Azeez Balogun, Daniel Ayeru, Bello Kabiru, Rasheed Akanni, Abdul Muhammad, Ahmeed Sanni, Jubril Lawal, Nurudeen Idris, Okazie Maxwell, Emmanuel Chibuzor, Alaba Mufutau, and Esther Emmanuel.

Authorities say surveillance and enforcement around key infrastructure will be intensified to deter further acts of vandalism across the state.
