Rev. Ifunaya Maduka barred for six months without pay after admitting to orchestrating “arranged” spiritual acts; disciplinary panel set up.
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has suspended Rev. Ifunaya Maduka, Vicar of St. Paul’s Parish, Nteje, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, over allegations of staging miracles and orchestrating fake prophecies.
Maduka was handed a six-month suspension without pay after an internal investigation found he engaged in what the church described as “manipulated and arranged prophecies,” allegedly involving individuals recruited or paid to simulate spiritual manifestations.
In a suspension letter dated April 27, the Bishop of the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo, disclosed that the priest admitted to the allegations when confronted with evidence uncovered during the inquiry.
The Diocese condemned the actions as “grossly unbecoming” of an ordained minister, citing deception, abuse of spiritual authority, and conduct capable of eroding public trust in the church.
It further noted that earlier assurances given by Maduka regarding his ministerial integrity were contradicted by the findings of the investigation.
As part of the sanctions, the priest has been ordered to immediately hand over all church property, funds, documents, and materials in his possession, and to vacate the parish premises within four days.
The Diocese also announced plans to constitute a disciplinary panel within one month to conduct a full investigation and determine any additional sanctions in line with church regulations.
The Church подчеркed that the suspension is aimed at upholding discipline, protecting doctrinal integrity, and preserving the credibility of the Anglican ministry, while expressing hope for the priest’s repentance and eventual spiritual restoration.
