Tragic rescue attempt ends in double fatality as firefighters recover bodies in Tsanyawa community

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of a 45-year-old man and his teenage daughter after both fell into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the development in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.

According to the agency, a distress call was received on Monday evening, July 21, reporting that the victims—identified as Abubakar Abdullahi and his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi—had fallen into the well.

Firefighters from the Tsanyawa Fire Service Office responded swiftly and initiated a rescue operation. However, efforts were hampered by darkness and challenging conditions at the scene, forcing the team to suspend operations temporarily.

An emergency rescue team from the fire service headquarters was later deployed early Tuesday to support the mission.

“The victims were eventually recovered from the well unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement said.

Authorities disclosed that preliminary findings suggest the teenage girl accidentally fell into the abandoned well, while her father entered in an attempt to save her but became trapped, leading to the loss of both lives.

The bodies have since been handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani.

The Fire Service expressed condolences to the bereaved family and warned residents against entering wells without proper safety equipment and trained emergency responders.
