Controversial claim, reportedly based on leaked chats, sparks backlash online as many accuse the speaker of trivialising serious allegations and shifting blame.
A wave of anger has trailed comments made by a social media user who claimed that the late Favour’s death was allegedly driven by a financial dispute rather than the widely discussed allegation of sexual assault involving a figure identified as “Odogwu Asaba.”
The man, citing purported WhatsApp exchanges between the two, argued that Favour had demanded ₦50,000 after the encounter and became distressed when the money was not paid. According to him, the situation escalated after she was allegedly told she could report the matter to anyone.
He further suggested that had the money been paid—going as far as proposing ₦100,000—the outcome might have been different. While he criticised Odogwu Asaba for what he described as insensitivity, his remarks have drawn widespread condemnation for appearing to downplay the gravity of the allegations and placing focus on financial compensation.
The speaker also referenced his personal experience, claiming he had been taken advantage of by an older woman while growing up, in an attempt to draw parallels with the case.
However, many social media users and commentators have rejected his narrative, stressing that issues involving consent, coercion, and accountability cannot be reduced to monetary terms. Critics argue that such statements risk undermining victims’ experiences and shifting attention away from the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.
As reactions continue to pour in, calls have intensified for authorities to establish the facts surrounding the case, while advocates emphasise the importance of handling sensitive matters with care and responsibility.
