UK Inquest Rules Nigerian Mother’s Death a Suicide After Year-Long Mental Health Struggles

27-year-old Beatrice Solomon, who moved from Nigeria in 2023, was found unresponsive at her Stoke-on-Trent home; no foul play suspected

An inquest in the United Kingdom has concluded that a 27-year-old Nigerian woman, Beatrice Solomon, died by suicide following a prolonged struggle with her mental health.

Beatrice, a mother-of-one, was found unresponsive at her residence on Norris Road in Stanfield, Stoke-on-Trent, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

According to evidence presented at the hearing, her husband, 40-year-old Damian Michael Butler, had left for work at about 4:30 p.m. but returned roughly two hours later, when he made the distressing discovery. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, but she was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m., police told the inquest.

Authorities confirmed there was no evidence of third-party involvement.

Testifying at the hearing, Butler said his wife had faced significant mental health challenges over the past year, which he linked to ongoing issues with Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also disclosed that she had previously made two attempts on her life.

A post-mortem examination conducted by pathologist Dr. Jones determined the medical cause of death, while Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor formally recorded a verdict of suicide.

“It is clear to me that Beatrice had researched and planned how to take her own life. I extend my sincere condolences to her family and friends,” the coroner said.

Beatrice, who worked as a carer, relocated to the UK from Nigeria in November 2023. She is survived by her young son and siblings.
