Two Die as Bus Bursts Into Flames in Ogun Dawn Crash

FRSC blames speeding and route violations as truck–bus collision at Ogere Junction leaves two dead, two unhurt

Two persons have lost their lives in a fatal road crash at Ogere Junction along the Ijebu Ode-Benin expressway in Ogun State, after a collision between a truck and a commercial bus triggered a fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday.

The accident, which occurred at about 5:10 a.m., involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus whose registration number could not be immediately identified.

According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), four adult males were involved in the crash. Two victims died, while the other two escaped without injuries.

The FRSC spokesperson in the state, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed that preliminary findings point to speeding and route violations as the primary causes of the crash. He added that the force of the collision caused the bus to burst into flames, leaving its front section completely destroyed.

“Rescue operatives arrived at the scene within two minutes of the alert and immediately began traffic control to prevent further incidents,” Odunsi said. “The affected lane was diverted to an alternative carriageway while efforts were made to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.”

The bodies of the deceased were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at a nearby mortuary.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and warned motorists against reckless driving.

He stressed that excessive speed and route violations remain leading causes of fatal accidents, particularly during periods of low visibility or on wet roads. Ogunjobi urged drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on journeys.

The FRSC also reiterated its commitment to safer roads through sustained enforcement, public education, and rapid emergency response.

Data from the commission shows that between January and May 2026, no fewer than 161 people died in 415 road crashes across Ogun State, while 1,007 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
