ADC chieftain asks voters to decide whether they want a “sincere Democrat” or what he describes as an “incompetent leader” in 2027

Former Kogi West Senator and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dino Melaye, has urged Nigerians to use the 2027 presidential election to determine the kind of leadership they want for the country.

Melaye, in a post shared on X, presented the forthcoming election as a critical choice between two contrasting styles of leadership, urging Nigerians to carefully consider the qualities they want in the next president.

The former lawmaker framed his message in a series of sharp comparisons, asking Nigerians to choose between what he described as a “compound liar” and a “sincere Democrat.”

He also asked voters to decide between an “alleged drug lord and marijuana consumer” and what he called a “sane politician.”

Without naming any candidate directly in the post, Melaye further contrasted a “tribal jingoist” with a “pan Nigerian,” and an “incompetent leader” with a politician possessing “enormous capacity.”

The ADC chieftain continued by focusing on the relationship between the president and ordinary Nigerians.

He asked voters to choose between a president “who is happy to see you in pain” and one who is “concerned about your wellbeing.”

Melaye also presented what he described as a choice between a “Lebanese controlled President” and a “people controlled President,” as well as between a “jet setting lifestyle President” and one who would “supervise projects across Nigeria.”

The former senator ended his message with a direct question to Nigerians:

“Nigeria, what type of President do you want?”

He argued that the 2027 presidential election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to determine the country's direction and make a choice between what he described as “light” and “darkness.”

“2027 is another opportunity to choose whether we want light or we want to continue in darkness,” Melaye wrote.

His comments come as political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with political parties, opposition groups and potential presidential contenders positioning themselves for the contest.

The ADC has increasingly emerged as a platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge the governing political establishment ahead of the election. Melaye, a prominent member of the party, has remained vocal on national political issues and frequently criticised the current administration.

His latest comments are likely to generate further debate as politicians begin to define the issues and personalities that could shape the 2027 presidential contest.
